Fumi Ueoka
‘Finally it becomes flat’

Born 1982 in Hiroshima, Japan, Fumi Ueoka studied traditional Japanese painting at the Nara College of Art, where he learned the alchemy of mineral pigments, ink, and glue on paper. Now based in Brussels, he explores the complexity of form and perception through acrylic painting, charcoal, soft lead pencil, and other media, merging the sensitivity of Nihonga with a contemporary sense of rhythm. His work reveals the tension between order and chaos, presence and absence, the visible and the hidden. His paintings have received several distinctions in Japan and Belgium, and his piece 82 years is part of the permanent collection of the Sado Museum. Tattooing has become an extension of his artistic exploration — a living surface where line and complexity intertwine.

"There is a quiet rhythm within complexity. My paintings are born from the process in which things that never existed in the same moment slowly overlap upon a single surface. Drifting between the figurative and the abstract, I paint as an act of trying to understand this world, guided by sensations that run like electricity and thoughts tossed about by society. And in the end, the work quietly rises as one result of that act, revealing the shape of a soul." —  Fumi Ueoka
